Job Summary:

The Technical Accounting Group (TAG) is seeking a Senior Accounting Consultant to focus on corporate-wide US GAAP insurance accounting policies and issues related to actuarial (DAC/reserves), reinsurance as well as supporting the LATAM region. TAG has the primary responsibility for supporting all regions and lines of business with respect to insurance, reinsurance, income taxes, and mergers and acquisitions related accounting matters. Specifically, TAG has the corporate-wide responsibility (1) to establish, monitor and provide assurance that the accounting policies of MetLife worldwide are in accordance with applicable authoritative guidance, (2) to partner with business unit personnel across all regions and lines of business to ensure timely and accurate implementation, interpretation and administration of these policies and (3) to influence standard setters to ensure prospective changes to accounting principles fully consider the views of MetLife and the insurance industry.

Specifically, this position will work closely with corporate and LOB actuaries, the Reinsurance Controller group and LATAM controllers. Primary responsibilities will be focused on corporate accounting policies, issues resolution and documentation.

Functional Responsibilities:

  • Partner with Corporate and LOB Actuaries to set corporate policies and research any accounting issues that arise from various actuarial processes, such as deferred acquisition costs, reserve valuation, loss recognition testing, etc.

  • Partner with the Reinsurance Controller group to analyze new and existing internal and external reinsurance treaties for risk transfer, initial and subsequent accounting treatments.

  • Research and prepare position papers presenting the Technical Accounting Group's (TAG) interpretation of the issues, application of appropriate guidance and conclusion on the accounting treatment.

  • Review existing corporate accounting policies and draft new accounting policies, with focus on actuarial and reinsurance related areas.

  • Support the LATAM region with respect to the management and resolution of all significant accounting issues.Lead periodic meetings with country controllers and work independently or partner with other TAG members to resolve accounting issues.

  • Assist in in-depth and concur reviews for SEC filing and legal entity GAAP and statutory basis financial statements

    Supervisory Responsibilities:

    6+ years of financial analysis experience in a public or private company environment

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, or an applicable field of expertise

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • Insurance Industry experience.

  • Extensive understanding of GAAP accounting guidance, with insurance accounting experience- US Statutory Insurance and general IFRS accounting knowledge a plus. Sound technical and research skills as demonstrated by an understanding and practical application of various accounting guidance.
