THE ROLE:The AVP, National Sales Director - Public Sector exists to provide senior leadership to the sales organization in the 1,000+ lives in the public sector marketplace.This position is responsible for leading the profitable top-line and bottom-line growth of this business using a broad portfolio of products including Life, Dental, Disability, Worksite and Voluntary. It is accountable for driving sales premiums, fees, earnings, persistency & marketing to existing customers, as well as building the public sector new client base.As the sales leader supporting the public sector, the incumbent will lead and be responsible for maximizing sales opportunities across the growing public sector while leveraging the availability of brokerage/3rd party relationship/exchanges community that serves this marketplace. This leader will transform and manage this business in an ever changing competitive landscape and be charged with building a team for success.They are responsible for managing and developing 6-8 direct reports in support of significant department P&L accountability. This leader will have significant visibility and drive outcomes by influencing internal partners, sales associates, and the external market community.The development of people and relationships is of paramount importance to the overall success of this position.

Reporting directly to the VP, Government Customer Unit Sales leader, this position will partner with Service, Operations, Marketing, Finance, HR, Compliance, Products and Underwriting to deliver results. This role will directly impact accelerating profitable growth and optimizing shareholder value for MetLife.

Our business plan assumes significant growth in the Public Sector as a result of the GVWB key strategies: 1) Invest to capture material share in the public sector and 2) Invest to become a significant Voluntary/Worksite player. The successful candidate will be responsible for the profitable growth of this market and build a sales strategy to drive the organization to meet and exceed that growth to capture market share.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the vision and strategy to ensure profitable growth of the Public Sector Customer Unit business.Develop, implement and monitor strategic business plan focused on developing maximum efficiency from sales resources while achieving appropriate ROI
  • Establish and/or maintain relationships with customers in the Public Sector marketplace.Additionally, create and maintain relationships with key brokers /3rd party relationships/exchanges in market.
  • Align strategies with the service and product organizations, marketing, underwriting and finance groups to achieve the proper balance between sales growth and earnings growth within the public sector marketplace earnings targets
  • Drive new sales and renewals of group and voluntary products in the 1,000+ public sector marketplace
  • Work closely with the group insurance Product and Marketing organizations to deliver a consistent and profitable product set incorporating profitable growth plans for the Public Sector Customer Unit - National Accounts business
  • Guide/participate the strategic account planning process for public sector cases to ensure proactive and comprehensive customer development across entire product portfolio
  • Monitor overall satisfaction of customers with MetLife and the way we do business with them.Partner with leadership of internal partner areas (product, billing, enrollment, etc.) as well as Sales and Service staff to maintain and improve high levels of satisfaction.
  • Responsible for overseeing the effectiveness of the sales support functions including prospecting activity, positioning for 2nd sale and cross sell opportunities, and working as liaison with internal partners to improve sales support delivery
  • Providing thought leadership in the public sector marketplace and internally with business partners
  • Recruit, motivate, develop and retain a diverse sales professional organization within an ever-changing marketplace. Ensure ongoing growth and development of team and organizational bench strength. Conduct training and monitor compliance

  • Reinforce the MetLife value proposition in market while growing customer relationships in the public sector

Job Requirements:

  • 10-15 years sales experience with current responsibility as a sales leader managing a sales team in the insurance industry, ideally including group insurance and Public Sector Segment
  • 5 - 8 years of experience in Sales Leadership developing and coaching a strong sales organization
  • Demonstrated successful sales experience with large institutional sales accounts (1,000 employees or more)
  • Exceptional presentation and communication skills
  • Innovative thinker, strong strategic visioning capabilities
  • Strong relationship management capabilities in support of Customer relationships, etc.
  • Strong business acumen, proven ability to act strategically, make decisions, and build partnerships and teams
