Job Description:

The STD Unit Leader will ensure that the team achieves or exceeds its business objectives in the areas of Claim Management Accuracy, Customer Centricity and Expense Management. Sets clear expectations of performance according to the MetLife vision and holds the team accountable to those expectations. Ensures that the team has the knowledge, skills, and tools to be successful and provides support as appropriate.

Functional Responsibilities:

  • Investigates group disability claims and makes determination on claims settlement within authorized guidelines. Ensures decisional accuracy and timeliness of all STD decisions and makes determination on claims settlement within authorized guidelines.
  • Anticipates, resolves and responds to TAM claim problems or productivity issues.
  • Works with customers to negotiate, arbitrate, and resolve issues, concerns, and expectations regarding process, service and performance guarantees.
  • Manages risk and performance of assigned team and claim block.
  • Accountable for ensuring team performance with delivery on customer commitments and high quality claim decisions which includes intimate knowledge of actions and decisions made by members of team and appropriate coaching and performance management to address any discrepancies.
  • Responsible for identification and delivery of action plans including Quality Assurance results, control reports, UM Scorecard, Appeals, customer escalations and complaints, etc.
  • Acts as project lead and /or participates in various project assignments.
  • Conducts quality management reviews to ensure financial and decisional accuracy - identify training opportunities and process improvements as outcomes.
  • Tracks data, analyzes, and reports information via established claims metrics report on standard and customized levels.
  • Manages individual unit operating costs.
  • Participates in customer presentations and new account implementations.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or required.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Full people management responsibilities, including hiring, firing, promotions, performance and compensation management, and training and development.

Job Requirements:

  • High School Diploma / GED
  • 5+ years of disability claims experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent.
  • 7+ years of claims experience, 2+ years of experience in leadership position
  • Solid business knowledge of STD / Group Life Disability products, in addition to Workers' Compensation, State laws, ERISA and Tax laws, ADA, FMLA, Rehabilitation, Social Security and Special Investigation processes.
  • Knowledge of medical procedures and terminology.
  • Proficient in use of multiple systems and technology resources.
  • Ability to read, interpret and explain contracts and disability plans.
  • Strong analytical, decision making and problem solving skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
