Title:

Lead UI Engineer

Job Description:

As our Lead UI Engineer, you will be making an impact from day one, frontend development underpins everything we do at ASOS and you will take responsibility for delivering our frontend software whilst driving the quality, consistency and technical alignment of development with the wider business.

You will ensure that you and your team are writing well-structured and clean code, sharing ideas for innovation and working as a well-oiled Agile team, delivering high quality software against business requirements. You will also take ownership of the planning and have a direct input into the decisions made around the future tech stack. We're exploring using new technologies, such as Angular 2, ReactJS, Knockout, Ember and anything else sensible including using no general purpose libraries, with a view to roll them out over this year and the next, and are looking forward to your opinions and effect on this.

You will facilitate the sharing of knowledge to spur ASOS's continual development, whilst ensuring quality and consistency across all development, which will adhere to good engineering principles including SOLID, DRY, KISS and YAGNI, and make sure that you and your team are using the correct and best tools, processes and frameworks.

UI Engineering is so important to us that this role will suit someone who is passionate about technology and the future of ASOS. We have a lot of fun too, so if you've also got a great sense of humour then you'll fit right in.

About the role:

  • You'll work as part of a deep-stack team to deliver complex, geo-distributed, large scale web applications that perform amazingly well for our customers, no matter where they are or what device they're using.
  • Working with the Principal UI Engineer, you will define the technology vision and overall objectives for UI development
  • You will guide other development teams on the implementation of the vision and adherence to the agreed objectives
  • Keep up to date with new UI technologies and understand the impact they're making
  • Provide technology leadership by sharing knowledge with others in the IT community and encourage others to do the same
  • Define the processes and recommend tools to ensure all ASOS quality standards are met, to include working with other areas of the business as well as 3rd parties
  • Actively promote ideas and techniques within the community - both within IT and in the company
  • Collaboratively work across all areas of IT development, actively liaising with developers and programme managers alike to improve overall quality and performance
  • Provide technical advice and guidance to development teams around strategies and production deployment plans with the teams ensuring high availability of service
  • You'll own area-specific processes within a defined framework to enable quality delivery
  • Ensure teams adhere to development standards, frameworks and guidance provided to maintain consistency throughout the software development lifecycle
  • Be instrumental in our recruitment process, to include helping prioritise recruitment requirements, review CVs through to interviewing candidates
  • As part of the UI Competency team, create the induction programme and the on-boarding process for new UI starters for agreement with their line manager
  • Work with the Development Managers to input into the mid-year and end of year review process
  • Act as a bridge between the Experience, Creative and Development teams, helping drive a common understanding and encouraging each to push the art of the possible

Job Requirements:

  • You've been working in a team to successfully deliver complex and highly performing software systems
  • You've led teams in an Agile or XP environment
  • You've worked across the business, managing stakeholders, meeting with Product Owners and Business Analysts to analyse requirements, develop ideas and design solutions and worked collaboratively with Creative Design teams
  • You've led the UI delivery of visually and functionally rich public facing websites
  • Worked with high volume, mission-critical systems
  • Expertise in the following technologies:
    • Team development - coaching, mentoring, leadership
    • You are able to architect high transactional and scalable web based systems (from a UI perspective)
    • Writing and reviewing functional requirements and NFRs, both internal and third party
    • Still technically hands on, and up to date - you lead by example
      • XHTML/HTML5
      • CSS/CSS3
      • JavaScript (and jQuery)
      • RIAs, SPAs - both accessible and SEO'd
      • MVC web frameworks (ideally ASP.NET MVC)
      • JavaScript frameworks (ideally Knockout)
      • JavaScript TDD/BDD (ideally Jasmine)
      • Responsive Web Development
      • Mobile web development
      • Rapid prototyping
      • Accessibility

  • Some other technologies that aren't essential, but would be a bonus are:
      • SASS (or LESS)
      • Test Automation Technologies (ideally Selenium)
      • E-commerce content management and search systems
      • .NET development
      • Visual Studio and TFS
      • Analytics
      • Database development
      • Node.js
      • Consultancy
      • Scrum Master
