At Netflix, we don't just deal with huge scale, we deal with a huge diversity of scale. We run thousands of applications on our back-end cloud systems. We serve hundreds of thousands of TV shows and movies to millions of customers across millions of devices, distributed across thousands of device families, all of which are constantly evolving and changing.

The Real-Time Analytics group at Netflix builds systems which continuously use diverse telemetry sources within our environment to sift through millions of signals and arrive at actionable, high-confidence decisions about what's going on in our environment, and what we should do about it. Some work we've already talked about publicly (and would like to open-source) includes:

  • Noticing when one out of thousands of servers is misbehaving based on Outlier Detection and automatically replacing it with a new server,
  • Automatically detecting whether new code deployed to production is at least as performant and correct as baseline code, and either accelerating deployment globally or rolling it back
  • For more details, take a look at our talk at AWS re:Invent.

    We see huge opportunities for using RTA decisions to drive automated systems, both to improve our ecosystem's self-healing capabilities, but also to make it easier for engineers to understand what's most important for them to look at, automatically deduce correlation and causation, and notice the most minute, imperceptible changes in our streaming environment before our customers do.

    What You'll Be Doing

    • You'll be the lead software engineer working with data scientists, data engineers and application developers across the entire company to design and build an anomaly detection platform on top of both real-time streaming and batch data
    • You'll accelerate the team's research and product development by creating reusable components and services in the machine learning space, so we can can quickly implement new algorithms, compute pipelines, and persistence stores
    • You'll build services for end users to enable feedback for supervised learning, adaptive modeling, and evaluation of algorithms
    • You'll scale out the platform to thousands of predictions per minute, and be the go-to person in our team for running our analytics on internal stream processing systems and other batch compute engines like Spark and Elastic MapReduce

    Job Requirements:

    What You'll Bring

    • Time series analysis is second nature to you. You have a background in quantitative analysis, machine learning or large data sets. Ideally, you've worked with operational or system level metrics before
    • You're highly proficient in Java/Scala and OOP design patterns, and are comfortable with scripting languages like Python and R
    • You've written services at scale. You take pride in prior platforms you've designed processing thousands of events per second in production
    • You're excited to design a real-time, distributed system from the ground up. You've engineered protocols, designed micro services, optimized data schemas in both key value and relational data stores, and applied the lambda architecture to solve problems in both batch and stream processing
    • You're biased to action, and believe in iterating quickly to solve hard problems
    • You thrive in an open culture where you'll have autonomy, be empowered to define your own technical solutions, and have the opportunity to collaborate with smart co-workers
