Senior Software Engineer - Playback Access Team

Job Description:

Senior Software Engineer - Playback Access Team

Los Gatos, California

Are you excited to design software solutions that continuously delight millions of customers across 190+ countries around the world? Do you have a passion for tackling the scale that comes with processing billions of requests daily? Are you driven to create elegantly simple designs for tough architectural problems and inspiring others to do the same? Then we would love to talk to you!

The Playback Access team at Netflix is looking for a senior engineer to help us build the platforms that enable secure access to our streaming content. Our team develops Netflix's cloud-based device and user authentication and content access systems. In partnership with the device teams, you will develop new ways to stream Netflix (e.g., cable boxes, next gen Smart TVs like Android TV). Through collaboration with the security engineering teams, we develop enhanced DRM capabilities to enable things like faster playback start times and more HD content for browser-based devices. Our systems are in the critical path for Netflix streaming to work, so we design them to be scalable and resilient to failures. For highlights of some of the team's work and approaches, see:

  • Self-assembling components
  • Message Security Layer
  • Applied outlier detection

Responsibilities

  • Address complex architectural problems with simple, intuitive design
  • Work at all phases of the software development lifecycle (planning, design, implementation, deployment and support)
  • Collaborate effectively with teammates and technical partners
  • Communicate technical ideas and direction in cross-functional settings
  • Take end-to-end ownership of major features and components: from inception to deploymentInnovate rapidly to evolve systems rapidly in support of changing business needs
  • Utilize test-driven development and continuous integration practices
  • Have sharp attention to detail and openness to critique through code and design reviews
  • Perform opportunistic code refactoring (you are comfortable changing tires on a moving vehicle)
Qualifications

  • 7+ years of relevant software development experience
  • BS or MS in Computer Science or equivalent engineering experience
  • Exceptional Java, C# or C++, object oriented design and programming skills
  • Experience with cloud-based architectures at scale
  • Solid understanding of OOP/OOD principles and data structures
  • Experience with distributed key-value persistence store environments
  • Exposure to web service security concerns / technologies (SSL, key management, DRM)
  • Experience with state-of-the art tools and techniques such as web services (REST), data modeling and communication (JSON/XML)
