Netflix is recruiting for a Director or Manager in our Content Acquisitions Group based in Tokyo, Japan. The Director/Manager will be a key member of the team, licensing Japanese animation from production companies and independent producers and distributors for digital streaming in all Netflix territories globally. S/he will report to the Vice President of Content, providing critical support in deal negotiation, execution and management.

The ideal candidate has strong critical thinking skills that allow for intense attention to detail as well as the ability to be highly entrepreneurial in a structured environment. S/he will have comfort with quantitative analysis as well as the creative evaluation of animation content. Demonstrated mastery of verbal and written communication skills is also important as s/he will be called upon to lead meetings and give presentations as well as negotiate deals and manage external relationships with key partners. The Director/Manager, Content Acquisition should be comfortable working autonomously in a fast-paced environment, taking the initiative, managing multiple projects, and working to find creative solutions with partners under tight time-frames. S/he is also a motivated, self-starter with a keen interest in and aptitude for finding great content from countries around the world.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Identify Japanese animation content for acquisition on a both a second-run and first-run basis
  • Participate in all aspects of negotiation (financial analysis and forecasting, contract drafting, amendments)
  • Represent acquisitions team interests across the company (operations, legal, finance, business intelligence/reporting, content marketing)
  • Manage and evaluate Japanese animation content through performance tracking, relationship cultivation, and research in local markets in an effort to find new talent, shows and films that engage our users
  • Develop a deep understanding of content markets through continuous focus on and knowledge of the competitive and market environment in multiple international territories
  • Communicate market trends and new content opportunities to internal and external partners

  • Demonstrated passion and understanding of Japanese animation
  • Demonstrated mastery of verbal and written communication skills including the ability to cultivate internal and external relationships
  • Great analytical and critical thinking skills
  • Demonstrated experience in market analysis, competitive analysis and strategic thinking
  • Ability to work independently and change direction frequently
  • Ability to manage and process detailed information while keeping perspective on the bigger picture- Demonstrated ability to work cross functionally
  • Excellent project and time management skills
  • Mastery of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint are a must
  • Candidates with Japanese language skills preferred

Job Requirements:

EDUCATION & WORK EXPERIENCE:

  • BA/BS required, MBA preferred but not required.
  • At least 10 years of work experience is required with at least 2 years of negotiation/sales experience.
  • Prior international television, studio, content development, management consulting or media-focused technology experience preferred but not required.
