Responsibilities include supervision of staff and interaction with individuals across multiple Merck sites under the guidance and direction of the Director/Executive Director, in compliance with Merck Policies and Procedures, GDMS Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and ICH-GCP guidelines and within departmental budget. Ensures effective interaction of GDMS staff with business partners to achieve business objectives.

Primary Activities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Directly managing a group of 15-20 encoding leads and vocabulary specialists that may include, Merck employees, contingent, non-exempt, or temporary workers, on-shore and offshore.
  • Proactively manages project risks with staff and escalates as appropriate.
  • Develops career plans and strong performance objectives, makes work assignments, conducts periodic skill assessments as well as annual performance appraisals, coaches for performance, provides ongoing feedback on performance, provides rewards and recognition, and sets priorities for direct reports.
  • Provides developmental opportunities for direct reports, including challenging growth assignments. Develops promotion strategies and prepares promotion recommendations. Ensures direct reports receive appropriate training and mentoring to be successful in their assignments.
  • Participates in the recruitment and onboarding process for new staff.
  • Maximizes staff effectiveness by working with direct reports to ensure a realistic workload that supports value-added work and work-life balance, estimating length and difficulty of tasks and projects, anticipating and adjusting for obstacles and setbacks, and elevating complex issues to the appropriate management level
  • Assumes specific functional leadership responsibilities for business deliverables assigned to direct reports or supervised staff on project
  • Increases functional effectiveness by supporting departmental efforts to simplify and standardize procedures to the greatest extent possible, sharing best practices and leading continuous improvement efforts
  • May serve as a functional area head with responsibilities for determining Standard Operating Procedures and other business practices for that area (including management of an operating budget).
  • Determines, collects, and interprets performance metrics. Identifies correction strategies and ensures they are implemented accordingly
  • Conducts management and functional area meetings, contributing expertise when necessary through formal or informal presentations
  • Keeps abreast of process, technology and regulatory changes both within and outside of Merck.

Job Requirements:

Qualifications Education:
  • B.A/B.S required
  • Master's Degree preferred

Required:
  • Minimum 5 years experience in pharmaceutical industry
  • Strong organizational, time management and problem solving skills
  • Experience leading Teams & managing projects
  • Ability to be flexible, multi-task and work independently
  • Exceptional t verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate with both technical and business areas.
  • Ability to present in a group environment

Preferred:
  • Previous Clinical data management experience preferred but not required
