As a Senior Engineer in a DevOps role of High Performance Computing, you will be using your scripting, architectural, systems engineering, Linux system administration, cloud, troubleshooting and communication skills to deliver and support research and statistical applications used to make key decisions in Merck's business. The Senior Engineer is a crucial role in the High Performance Computing team that requires a deep understanding of the technology stack, an understanding of the scientific domain, and the ability to work directly with scientists to understand their problems, devise and communicate solutions. Qualified individuals will thrive on solving challenges that are impacting production applications and working with team members across the organization to deliver quality automated solutions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Understand user requirements and architect solutions
  • Provide third-level product support of scientific applications primarily in the Linux environment, including Java, R, Python and Perl-based academic, internal, as well as commercial codes
  • Install and configure software and related infrastructures
  • Deploy software/code/tools, upgrades, patch deployment, OS upgrades in either in-house infrastructure or AWS
  • Coordinate with the Development team and Q/A team for the deployment of code
  • Maintain the environment (test data, test accounts)
  • Technical research with regard to the infrastructure and maintenance of lab or research-production environment activities
  • Responsible to test and write work instructions (WI) for both end-users and Operations
  • Interact with the Operations teams to coordinate for any set-up needs
  • Be responsible for change and version controls
  • Attend architecture/design phase meetings on projects and provide input
  • Availability for evening and/or weekend work when necessary
  • Analyze, design, develop, maintain products and assist in their packaging for research use
  • Build prototypes, products and systems suitable for user acceptance testing (UAT)
  • Design testing procedures and coordinate with others to perform tests
  • Comply with applicable company policies and procedures.

  • BS
Required:
  • 4+ years' experience in Linux System Administration/Engineering, familiarity with Data Center environments and monitoring tools
  • Strong Linux O/S experience, RHEL or CentOS preferred
  • Experience with at least one of Ansible, Puppet or Chef
  • Hands-on expertise with Python, Ruby or Perl scripting
  • Hands-on experience with Amazon Web Services (AWS)
  • 3+ years of project delivery, to include system implementations, integration, migration, enterprise software deployments and upgrades
  • Experience with PBS Pro, Univa/Grid Engine or other DRM's
Preferred:
  • Experience working in DevOps environments is highly desired
  • Experience in Parallel and High Performance Computing (HPC) environments is also highly desirable
  • Continuous Integration - Jenkins or Bamboo
  • JSON / REST - API's familiarity
  • Strong investigation and problem-solving skills, takes ownership, follows issues through to completion
  • Strong customer facing focus and excellent written and spoken communication skills
  • Possesses a "do whatever it takes" attitude toward getting the done, putting forth the time and effort to accomplish goals
  • Ability to handle multiple complex projects simultaneously, work under deadlines and subject to heavy project load
  • Ability to work comfortably with minimal supervision, take responsibility, deal with ill-defined problems
  • Experience with research environment is preferred
