Jobs in Switzerland: Short Review

The state puts fairly stringent requirements for workers in return for high pay and comfortable working conditions. A predominant number of jobs in Switzerland requires a high skill level. They welcome staff who are able to bring benefit not only to the heads, but also to the land as a whole.

Peculiar Properties of Switzerland Employment

The lack of the necessary workmanship and graduation or skills acquired with praxis, are the main reasons for non-compliance of supply and demand in the labor market. The greatest number of open careers in Switzerland are in the following areas:

  • skilled workers (electricians, locksmiths, welders, etc.);
  • management teams of companies;
  • trade workers;
  • finance and accounting;
  • assistants and secretaries (with knowledge of several languages);
  • engineers;
  • legal care professionals (notaries, lawyers and secretaries);
  • representatives of technical specialties.

If one’s occupation does not belong to the primary sought-after jobs in Switzerland for foreigners, the employer can attract attention by the phrase "easy to train" (provided that one satisfying with other mandatory demands).

Switzerland Employment Opportunities: Requirements for Applicants

Officially to get a job (in Geneva, or a small town) is possible, if one has the following set of documents:

  • Swiss working visa;
  • an invitation from an employer;
  • entry permit.

It is advisable to have a contract before entering. Without this paper, the chances of getting an entry permit are very low. As regards to individual demands, hirers prefer to recruit workers with a high level of knowledge and some experience in the area. The standard requirement of Swiss employers is knowledge of at least one of the state languages (depending on the workplace location).

Switzerland Careers: Wages and Worktime

The working time lasts longer than elsewhere on the continent and can be up to 45-50 hours per week. Also, part-time and overtime work (with higher pay) is common in the country. The companies pay salary once a month. It is common to pay thirteenth salary. Furthermore, the law does not establish the minimum wage, except for some areas (e. g. catering). Therefore, salary is significantly different according to the following factors:

  • scope of work (in finance, wages are higher than in agriculture);
  • canton (jobs in Zurich are higher paid than in the central part of the country);
  • worker’s visa ( the state has three kinds with differentiated taxes);
  • employee’s background and practice (skilled or unskilled workplace and work).

The Swiss are an advocate for a legislative regulation of the maximum salary and are opposed to unearned incomes.
